Just two weeks ago, a new world record was set in Saudi Arabia. Near Hegra, the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Saudi Arabia famous for its Nabataean tombs, AlUla Moments (the Event Organizer of the destination AlUla) staged the record-breaking Hot Air Balloon Glow Festival in an attention-grabbing way.
For the new world record, a total of 142 brightly illuminated hot air balloons were lined up for a show above the ancient site. They lit up the rock-strewn desert landscape on March 1, 2022, providing spectacular images.
The international balloon event was part of the AlUla Skies Festival, which attracted worldwide attention among hot air balloon fans from February 27 to March 12, 2022. At sunrise, there was an opportunity to fly the balloons over the ancient site or watch the balloon spectacle in amazement.
The world’s largest hot air balloon glow show was organized by AlUla Moments in collaboration with SAHAB (the Saudi Arabian Ballooning Federation). The record attempt was monitored by Guinness World Records™. With 142 balloons, the new world record was confirmed. The previous record was also set in AlUla – during the 2019 Winter in Tantora Arts and Culture Festival, where 100 hot air balloons were involved in the show.

The hot air balloon record is not the only world record that the oasis destination of AlUla is breaking. The Maraya Conference and Entertainment Center also holds a Guinness World Records™ title for the world’s largest mirror building, with 9,740 square meters of mirrors creating a visual illusion analogous to a "mirage" reflecting the mountains and sandy landscapes of the Ashar Valley. The extraordinary concert and event hall can look forward to receiving one of the world’s biggest architecture awards, the Architizer A+ Award, since 2020.
