City Events Crowd pullers – Robotic Dinosaurs roar in Hong Kong

New technologies exert a very special fascination on people around the globe. Exhibitions involving new technology trends are therefore very popular as crowd pullers in the field of event and destination marketing. Hong Kong is also relying on animal robotics for its first major out-of-home campaign since the COVID pandemic.

Until mid-July, visitors to Hong Kong can experience the "Flash Pop-up: Robotic Dinos" campaign. Two life-size robotic dinosaurs – the Tyrannosaurus Rex (T-Rex) and the Stegosaurus – can be seen in the major shopping centers Harbour City and Times Square. The project is an initiative of the First Initiative Foundation (FIF), a non-profit organization with the goal of promoting Hong Kong’s culture and destination appeal.

It is Hong Kong’s first major outdoor exhibition after the fifth COVID-19 surge. The public is welcome to take free selfies with the dinosaur robots against Hong Kong’s famous backdrop of Tsim Sha Tsui’s Victoria Harbour, as well as in the bustling Causeway Bay shopping district. Furthermore, those interested can participate in a range of dinosaur-themed activities.

Until July 17, the Harbour City shopping mall is presenting the fearsome 4.6-meter-high and 12-meter-long T-Rex on the "Ocean Terminal Deck." Meanwhile, the 3.7-meter-tall and 9-meter-long Stegosaurus roars on the Times Square’s "Open Piazza" (through July 10, 2022). The prehistoric animals were recreated life-size based on scientific findings, under the supervision of paleontologists. They not only look alive, but can also breathe and roar like living animals, according to the organizers.

The exhibition will be accompanied by activities for children in particular. They can register for a "Dinosaur Academy". Here the kids learn about the history of dinosaurs in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, see paleontological fossils up close, use their creativity and imagination to draw their own dinosaur and finally become little dinosaur experts. For a donation, children will receive a "Dinosaur Hunter Passport" to track down dinosaur tracks scattered throughout Harbour City. Upon completion of the challenge, they will receive dinosaur learning cards and a Dinosaur Hunter certificate.
