The EVVC, leading association of event venues in Europe, aims to achieve climate neutrality for their members by 2040. Furthermore, the label "Blauer Engel" (Blue Angel), one of the best-known EU eco-labels, is to become a seal of quality for sustainable events and event locations on the basis of a catalog of criteria that has yet to be developed.
According to Meeting & EventBarometer Germany, there were around 2.9 million events with approximately 423 million attendees, just in Germany, in the pre-Corona year 2019. Experts expect these numbers to return to a similar level from 2023/24. The introduction of a new eco-label for "Green Events" an "Green Event Locations" is therefore at the top of the agenda for the EVVC.
The criteria catalog (still to be drafted) currently includes the following requirements for sustainable event locations / venues: High standard of building insulation, sustainable heating and energy-saving event technology, 100 percent climate-neutral electricity by 2030, sustainability as a criterion for tenders, less wastewater and waste, catering that takes climate and resource protection into account, environmentally friendly travel; furthermore social responsibility, which among other things stands for more diversity and Barrier-free accessibility.
