Fancy Outdoor Events Full Moon Swimming at the Highest Swimming Event in the Alps

A very special summer event is promoted by the tourist association Obertauern (Austria) in cooperation with the Austrian wild swimming pioneer and ice swimmer Hansjörg Ransmayr. At the almost 2,000-meter-high lake Grünwaldsee, an offbeat moonlight swim promises not only fun but also a very special invigorating effect.

Fancy a refreshing swim in a mountain lake, and this on a cozy summer night under a full moon? That sounds romantic, but the water temperature of the Austrian Lake Grünwaldsee is a maximum of 15 degrees. The highest swimming event in the Alps starts on August 12, 2022 at an altitude of 1,938 meters, at the beginning of dusk. Participants will circle an illuminated "moon buoy" anchored in the lake and have to swim a distance of about 100 meters, which is quite a personal challenge for a "non-ice swimmer" at these temperatures. But the best experiences are always those where you leave your personal comfort zone and grow beyond yourself.

Tourism director Mario Siedler is pleased about the highlight of the summer season and says: "The Obertauern region with its many beautiful mountain lakes is predestined for natural swimming. All those who take on such a sporting challenge for the first time can get professional advice on the spot. The regional Water Rescue guarantees a safe cold-water experience for all intrepid swimmers."

In the 2022 edition of the Full Moon Swim, brave swimmers will take the plunge into the cold, crystal-clear waters of the mountain lake, whose temperature in August ranges from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. The event starts after dark at about 9:15 pm. For better orientation, the swimmers carry light buoys and glow sticks. As a reward, a sauna and heated hot tubs await them on their return to the shore, where they can relax and enjoy the view of the peaks of the mountains Seekareck (2,217 m), Seekarspitze (2,350 m) and Wurmwand (2,188 m) in the moonlight. Afterwards a DJ heats up the participants and also all "non-swimmers" on the terrace of the Hochalm Alpine lodge.

Initiator of the full moon swimming event is the Austrian wild swimming pioneer and ice swimmer Hansjörg Ransmayr, who tested the lake Grünwaldsee in February for a swim in 1 degree Celsius cold water. Star guest at the full moon swim is, as in the previous year, the Austrian record ice swimmer Josef Köberl, who, among other things, swam in a crevasse for 38 minutes in water that was minus 0.23 degrees cold.
