As of today, breathtaking light installations by leading light artists can be seen at various locations in the Dutch city of Eindhoven and also outside the city. The impressive light art festival GLOW takes place this year with special corona protection measures.
The theme of the Eindhoven Light Festival 2021 is "Moved bij Light". The festival features great light art projects, such as the poetic 3D projection by artist Yann Nguema on the façade of the former Paterskerk and the artwork "Carbon Arc" by Ivo Schoofs at the Stadskanaal – a huge searchlight from World War II, where a bright beam of light is reflected back by the water.
Probably the most powerful eye catcher of the GLOW 2021 light festival is "Porte Celesti" by Italian artist Valerio Festi. He has created impressive gates of light at twenty locations in the city center, which can be discovered during the Christmas holidays until the beginning of January. One of these gates can also be seen at Eindhoven Airport.
The work "Fotoprint" by Hugo Vrijdag at Ketelhuisplein is intended to amaze young and old alike. The entire square and the surrounding house facades will change into a massive sea of flowers made of light. Children from sixty Eindhoven elementary schools have been drawing flowers, plants and insects for weeks.
New this year are two satellite locations of light art: at the Roosdonck Molen in Nuenen, the sunflower installation "Sunflowers for Van Gogh" by Hugo Vrijdag can be admired. The other project is an impressive light and water show at the High Tech Campus. It was designed by the French company Aquatique Show.
"Each festival spot has its own identity, its own architecture and its own history. The new structure gives visitors more time and space to admire and engage with the light installations," said a GLOW spokesperson.
Just like museums, the locations of the various GLOW installations are considered so-called "doorstroomlocaties." That’s why GLOW organizers decided last Thursday to fence in the light installations and do a COVID-19 security check at the entrance.
