Virtual Life New survey shows growing interest in Events at Metaverse

24% of all Germans who are interested in the so-called Metaverse would also like to use such a platform to attend Events. This is the result of a representative survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Association of the German Games Industry – game.

In a metaverse, the real world merges with the virtual world. By means of modern digital technologies (3D, AR, VR, etc.) and the use of avatars, a brand new space for communication and experience is created. According to the results of a recent YouGov study on Germans' interest in the metaverse idea, more than one in three Germans (35%) over the age of 16 can already imagine using a metaverse in the future. This corresponds to over 24 million people. Of these, 7 percent definitely want to use the metaverse, 15 percent first want to learn more about it but are then ready to enter the virtual world, 13 percent would use it once it has become established. Around 6 in 10 Germans have not yet heard of the metaverse at all.

Those who are basically interested in the metaverse idea are primarily interested in the new possibilities for communicating with others. 30% would like to exchange ideas with third parties via the metaverse. 26% of respondents would like to play games in the virtual space, followed by attending virtual events (24%), such as concerts or exhibitions. Other reasons given were: watching movies and series with the community (17%), social shopping (15%) and business meetings (14%).

The current hype about a metaverse is actually not new. The term "Metaverse" was first mentioned in 1992 in the science fiction novel "Snow Crash" by Neal Stephenson and has since been found in a wide variety of cultural and technological contexts. The virtual world "Second Life" attracted a great deal of attention almost 20 years ago. In Germany, the metaverse idea is just about to become a trend topic (again), not least due to the introduction of Meta Platforms, Inc., where Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp are now managed.

Felix Falk, managing director of the German game association, explains further reasons for the raising interest: "The idea of the Metaverse is one of the most exciting visions of the digital economy. Not least the worldwide Corona pandemic has made it clear how important digital spaces already are in the lives of millions of people. People often think of messengers, social networks or video calls, but games are already showing what interaction with others can look like – interactive, social and immersive. This is why both companies and technologies from the games industry play a central role for the Metaverse concept. In addition to 3D engines, virtual and augmented reality glasses, network technologies and game design are bringing the Metaverse concept step-by-step to life."
