At many events there is an after-show party or a supporting programme with delicious cocktails and drinks. While at many business events people like to do without alcoholic beverages, there is one accessory that should not be missing: the straw. It’s often the small details that turn a simple drink into a social experience.
Plastic straws are rightfully a "no go" for sustainability reasons, and their production and sale have been banned in the EU since July 2021. In the meantime, there are many alternatives, such as glass or metal straws. Straws made of pasta dough, for example, are also available. But these often do not meet the demands of many customers.
A family-owned company in northern Germany is now relying on a natural raw material to bring back unadulterated cocktail enjoyment to the event people. As a trader in reeds, entrepreneur Tom Hiss was very familiar with reeds as a raw material: A rapidly renewable plant that grows tubular and is naturally waterproof.
So the idea for a drinking straw made from reeds was obvious, but there was not yet a food-grade finish with clean, smooth cut edges and uniform lengths. Tom Hiss therefore developed a machine and an environmentally friendly process to produce the perfect drinking straw: sustainable, attractive and pleasant to use.
Using the brand name PAIO, Tom Hiss now offers a range of tasteless, sturdy, 100% sustainable drinking straws made from reeds. The straws are dishwasher safe, reusable and naturally compostable. The straws made from reeds evoke a real beach feeling, making them a perfect accessory for after-show parties and business barbecues.
Reeds grow the way nature wants them to. Sometimes narrower, sometimes wider, sometimes long or short. For PAIO, this is not a disadvantage, but a gift. Sorted and trimmed, the different sizes are suitable for different types of cocktails, also for thicker cocktails or smoothies. In the German online store of PAIO (English shop version is also online), the natural drinking straws are currently available in five different sizes, or in an assorted mix box to try out.
