Benchmark Event How gamescom Promotes Accessibility, Sustainability, and Democracy

gamescom is systematically expanding its "gamescom cares" and "gamescom goes green" initiatives for the upcoming 2026 event (August 26–30, 2026, Cologne / Germany). The world’s leading trade fair and event for computer and video games is increasingly focusing on new accessibility guidelines, expanded partnerships for material and food rescue, and the promotion of socio-political values.

Under the collective umbrella of "gamescom cares," the organizers are bundling strategic measures in the areas of inclusion, awareness, youth protection, and community well-being. This spectrum is complemented by the ecological program "gamescom goes green," which implements concrete initiatives for resource conservation and CO₂ reduction. Significant expansions of these areas of responsibility have now been announced for gamescom 2026.

Felix Falk, Managing Director of the German Games Industry Association GAME (co-organizer of gamescom), explains:

"As the flagship event for the global games world, gamescom carries a special responsibility, which we actively embrace through numerous projects under the gamescom cares umbrella. I am delighted that we can take further steps again this year – whether for greater accessibility, resource conservation, or a strengthened social community. All of this is only possible thanks to the strong commitment of our partners and the community – a very heartfelt thank you to all of them!"

The high priority of corporate social responsibility is also emphasized from the trade fair company’s perspective. Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse GmbH, points out:

"Addressing societal issues is a major objective for Koelnmesse across all our events. gamescom has played an important pioneering role in this regard for many years. Together with our partners, we continuously review and develop measures for greater participation, sustainability, and respectful coexistence."

Practical Guidelines for Enhanced Inclusion and Accessibility

Starting with gamescom 2026, expanded Accessibility Guidelines will come into effect. The corresponding manuals were developed in collaboration with partners such as the "Netzwerk Barrierefreies Gaming" (Accessible Gaming Network). They serve as operational assistance for exhibitors to integrate accessibility into the conceptualization and realization of their exhibition stands at an early stage. The existing self-commitment to barrier-free, step-free access will be supplemented this year by mandatory information regarding the accessibility of the respective on-site offerings.

The guidelines aim to optimize the quality of stay for people with disabilities and raise awareness within the community. Specifically, the requirements include practical recommendations for designing accessible queues, gaming stations, and retreat areas, as well as specific measures for handling sensory overload. In the digital space, this is flanked by detailed routing information within the gamescom indoor navigation finder, alongside an increased contingent of wheelchairs available for rent on site.

Expansion of Awareness Management and Safe Spaces

On-site prevention and support are receiving both personnel and infrastructural reinforcement for 2026. An additional awareness desk will be established in the northern area of the exhibition grounds, supported by an expanded awareness team. Established tools such as quiet rooms (Safer Spaces) as well as digital and analog contact options via the "Saferspaces" service remain fully active.

Sustainability Through Food and Material Rescue

In the area of environmental protection, gamescom is establishing a new cooperation with Kölner Tafel e. V. (a Cologne charity that distributes food to those in need). For the first time, exhibiting companies will have the opportunity to donate surplus food from their stand catering at the end of each trade fair day, free of charge and uncomplicated, for social purposes.

At the same time, the strategic cooperation with the circular economy service provider Trash Galore is entering its third year and being scaled in scope. While previously only residual materials from the organizer’s own event spaces could be repurposed, this recycling pathway is now also open to exhibitors for surplus stand-building materials. The relevance of this measure is demonstrated by the previous year’s key figures: In 2025, 2,260 kilograms of material were saved from destruction and handed over to six regional institutions (including volunteer projects, social facilities, and recycling workshops). Trash Galore estimates the resulting environmental relief at around 5,000 kilograms of saved CO₂.

Continuation and Balance of Long-Term Climate Protection Projects

The core strategy for CO₂ avoidance, reduction, and compensation continues unabated. Exhibitors can still make voluntary climate protection contributions via ClimatePartner. A central pillar remains the offering of "Green Tickets," the proceeds of which directly benefit the "gamescom forest." In 2025, this initiative recorded a sales growth of around 20 percent, with over 12,500 tickets sold. As a result, the reforestation area of the gamescom forest has grown to currently around 33,500 square meters. Supporters can also fund the project year-round through direct donations.

European Premiere in the Name of Promoting Democracy

A novelty in the gamescom 2026 program is the first European edition of the well-known speedrunning format "Games Done Quick" (GDQ). From August 28 to 30, 2026, the event will generate charity donations over three consecutive days. The proceeds will go to the "Gaming for Democracy" initiative, a joint project of the Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur (Digital Games Culture Foundation) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung, which strengthens social engagement and democratic values through the medium of games culture.
