A world record attempt by the Rhaetian Railway (Switzerland) is currently thrilling many rail fans. On October 29, 2022, the world’s longest passenger train will travel across the spectacular Albula line. The world record train will be the longest passenger train that has ever traveled anywhere on the planet. On its journey it has to cross high mountains, master tight curves and numerous tunnels. In the village of Bergün (Switzerland), a special festival area awaits visitors on the day of the world record attempt. There will be a varied supporting program with musical entertainment, comedy, gastronomy and a very special railroad village. The world record attempt can be followed directly on the festival grounds via livestream.
The world record train is made up of 25 components, each with four wagons, and has the length of incredible 1.91 kilometers. The weight of the record-breaking train is around 2990 tons. The world record route from Preda to Alvaneu is 24,930 meters long. In the process, 789.4 meters of altitude will be climbed. The train will travel at 30 to 35 km/h, and the record journey will take a total of around 46 minutes. Communication within the train will be ensured by means of an almost 2-kilometer-long military telephone provided by the Swiss Civil Defense. In addition, 7 engine drivers and 21 technicians will be deployed on the train in order to be able to run it. The Albula tunnel will be closed to rail traffic for around 12 hours.
The festival site in Bergün can only be accessed by train and is limited to 3,000 guests. Those who travel early in the morning can follow the world record attempt on the track at various viewpoints. In addition to a livestream on the festival grounds, the record attempt will also be broadcast live on the Blick TV digital channel.
