The best ideas for team building events are often very simple. The EventMasterBook.com editorial team explains in this article why a day of hiking, a glamping camp and a sofa party are among the best team building activities today.
Since remote work has become the new "standard", team building is becoming increasingly important. Many people work alone at home, and team collaboration takes a bit of a back seat. Although there are sufficient tools and methods that promote team collaboration, these rather administrative project management tools are often not enough for a good team spirit.
So what can be done to ensure that the individual personalities and talents form a strong unit, especially when things get hectic and more agility is required as part of project work? What are efficient teambuilding measures and which activities have a long-term effect even after the event?
The fact is: people always need the feeling of doing something meaningful. A team event that focuses on a "joint raft building" or a survival camp is a great experience for many people, but it always depends on the individual team members. If you have people among your team who, for example, have little interest in technical, hands-on team challenges that involve building something that isn’t actually needed (and will be dismantled or discarded after the event), you need to think in other directions.
Each team leader must therefore have the respective team individuals in mind at the beginning of the event planning phase. He/she must always consider which teambuilding activities make sense and are reasonable for everyone. Each team member must be able to participate and the fun factor should not be missing either. In addition, the best teambuilding activities are those that not only pull the team together, but also create personal added value for each individual.
With these requirements in mind, three types of team building measures emerge from the flood of possible team building activities that are surprisingly simple, but no less effective:
1. a hiking day
Ranked #1 on the list of best activities for employee events for the purpose of team building is hiking. A beautiful route, a great nature experience, combined with a creative picnic or a visit to an inspiring gastronomic location is good for body and soul and a welcomed time out from everyday life. A team hike offers plenty of opportunity for conversation, especially if there are always new things to discover along the hiking route. The hiking guide can integrate the group, for example by playing small quiz games in (changing) small groups.
2. team glamping
The second best team building activity is an "innovation camp" in a camping resort. Since not everyone is a fan of camping or tenting, a "glamping resort" should be chosen as the appropriate venue. This is not quite as affordable as classic camping, but it is an extraordinary "nature plus wellness plus luxury experience" that many people have on their bucket list for desired trips anyway. In the EU, for example, there is a great variety of beautiful glamping resorts. To bring the team together not only as camping buddies, but also on a project management level, you can organize, for example, a team cooking challenge, or an innovation challenge to gather ideas on a current business topic. In this special environment, good ideas will come easily.
3. a sofa-party
This format is a team building concept especially for remote teams, i.e. for teams that regularly work together only (or partially) at a distance and communicate with each other via video conferencing and collaboration software. People know each other as colleagues, but not as private individuals. But that would be important for a better team cohesion. To compensate for this shortcoming, you can organize a "sofa-party". Here, each team member provides an insight into his or her own home. The team meets via video conference for a joint breakfast on the sofa at home and everyone tells in 1 minute why they are sitting exactly on this sofa (where does the sofa come from?, why this color? etc.). The employer provides the catering boxes required for the breakfast or business lunch.
Please note: no one should be forced to give other people a glimpse into their own home. Optionally, you can have the remote / digital event from any place. Participants don’t have to sit on their own sofa, they can join the team event in the park or at another favorite location. If you want to make sure that this very special event format is well received by the team, you should conduct a short feedback survey among the team beforehand.
